Komen Advocates Training Outreach for Center for Patient Partnerships
Through its ongoing work with cancer survivors, the Center for Patient Partnerships has recognized the need for peer-to-peer support for survivorship planning. Building on the strengths of Komen Advocates trained and now experienced as patient advocates, year III of the Komen Advocates Training Program will engage advocates in a broader outreach initiative, focusing on comprehensive survivorship planning.

Komen Advocates will conduct small group workshops with breast cancer survivors throughout Dane County, acting as guides and coaches for women in the midst of survivorship planning. They will also continue to work with individuals in need of patient advocacy. Staff will provide technical assistance to organizations serving Latina and African American breast cancer survivors and their families.

The program's goal is to change the dialogue about survivorship planning to encompass more than just medical care planning. The approach intends to shift ownership and control of the survivorship care plan to survivors, helping them build skills to engage with provides and their own support systems. Komen Advocates will bring this approach to the community, gather evidence about the ways breast cancer survivors evaluate their own needs, choose elements of a plan based on personal values, develop plans, and begin to engage providers to act in partnership.

UW Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center

Advances in Multi-Disciplinary Cancer Care: Survivorship Conference
The University of Wisconsin Paul P. Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center will sponsor a one-day professional education conference (Advances in Multidisciplinary Cancer Care: October 24, 2008) with to-be determined nationally recognized health care professionals/speakers addressing psychosocial issues for breast cancer patients, as well as other cancer patients.

Now in its seventh year, the 2008 fall cancer conference will focus on psychosocial and spiritual issues of cancer patients and their caregivers/family members. With the progress in treatment that research has initiated, there is a need to increase awareness among health professionals about the specific physical, emotional and psychosocial needs of cancer patients as well as the emotional needs of family members/caregivers.

Brendan Halpin, author of It Takes A Worried Man, has already been confirmed as one of the keynote speakers for the conference. His book talks about the first six months of his late wife's treatments for breast cancer. According to Halpin, the book is about "lust, fear, hatred, faith, popular culture, and love."
